"Nothing about us without us"

Cancer Voices NSW provides the voice of people affected by cancer and is the peak coalition for NSW cancer consumer groups.

Founded in 2000, our purpose is to represent, and to act on, the needs and interests of people affected by cancer in our state and beyond, working in partnership with decision-makers. We focus on the areas of diagnosis, information, treatment, research, support and care, providing a consumer voice wherever cancer journey decisions are made.

Palliative Care Improvement Campaign 2011-2012

Our hugely successful 2011 campaign raised 23,000 signatures to a petition seeking Government action. A Debate in Parliament followed on 10 August, supported by the Premier, Minister for Health and the Shadow Minister for Health. Funding was almost immediatley restored to Northern Sydney palliative care services. Cancer Voices now has a seat on the Palliative Care Expert Advisory Group (PCEAG) which reports to the Minister for Health on 31 March about how to deliver the Minister's commitments to improve palliative care services state-wide.

Cancer Specialist Referral Directory - now online

Go to www.canrefer.org.au to see a full list of NSW cancer treatment teams which offer multidisciplinary care, with names ond contact details. For Cancer Voices NSW and people affected by cancer, this is the culmination of several years of advocacy. We collaborated with the Cancer Institute NSW to enable patients and their referring doctors to locate the most suitable and best qualified specialist treatment teams.

Celebrating Ten Years of Cancer Voices - Booklet now out!

A Decade of Success: Cancer Voices NSW 2000-1010 A record and discussion of our purpose, achievements, our people, activities; with reflections and comments from stakeholders, case studies and thougths about the next decade. CVN members will receive their free copy with the September newsletter. Copies are being sent to stakeholders, government, cancer care centres, clinical decision-makers, researchers, politicians and the media.

Why record our first 10 years? Perhaps even more importantly, the cancer consumer movement in Australia, which Cancer Voices NSW spearheaded, should be recorded. Others will benefit from understanding our history. We can share what we have learnt and apply it ourselves for the decades ahead. Academics and researchers will have a real-life case study of what works best in health consumer advocacy – and what does not!
