and Recognition
Many of our
achievements have come about by encouraging and influencing
other sectors of the cancer world to do the things CVN members
recognise as needing to be done. Some are achieved on our own
initiative. They are all aimed, at various levels, to make a
positive difference to the cancer experience of people now, and
of those who follow us.
- Establishment of Cancer Voices NSW October 2000. Fifth Birthday
celebrated 2005.
- Ongoing representation
of the needs and ideas of thousands of people diagnosed and
living with cancer
- Successful planning
of, and assistance to, the establishment of Cancer Voices in
other states and territories, and nationally.
- Publication of the
Charter of Cancer Consumer Values, November 2005, in response
to the Paris Charter Against Cancer, launched NSW Parliament
House, 1 March 2006.
- Productive
planning with The Cancer Council NSW to improve co-ordination
of and assistance to cancer support groups
- Input via
submissions, participation in seminars and presentations to
conferences on all topics of importance to cancer consumers
- Development
of, and participation in, the Consumer Involvement in Research
Project (The Cancer Council 2005).
Set of Cancer Consumer Values Criteria for application to research proposals.
- Cancer
Consumer Advocacy Training program (commenced October 2001)
developed and maintained (with The Cancer Council NSW)
- Over 30
trained and informed consumer representatives at over 70 decision-making
tables (boards, committees, working parties)
- Senate Inquiry's
(June 2005) top recommendation calls for a Directory of Cancer
Services and Specialists to be developed by Cancer Voices in
association with Cancer Australia
- Complementary
Therapies Conference 23 OCtober 2005: mounted with The
Cancer Council NSW; Complementary and Alternative
Therapies Position Statement
- Promotion
of dialogue between major stakeholders to improve co-ordination
of cancer services in NSW (NSW Health, Cancer Institute
NSW and Area Health Services)
- Raised awareness of need to reform the NSW Isolated Patients'
Travel and Accommodation Scheme: Petition of 16,000 in 2004
- Memorandum of Understanding re inclusion of Cancer Voices signed
with The Cancer Council NSW and being negotiated with the Cancer
Institute NSW
- Consumer access to lists of cancer specialists,
access via The
Cancer Council Australia website
- Development
of Fact Sheets about Cancer, now available from The
Cancer Council NSW
- Successfully
advocated for "on demand" consumer access to pathology
reports
- Ongoing participation
in cancer services planning of major Area Health Services
- Successful
proposal for a national cancer plan to improve access to optimal
treatment for all Australians diagnosed with cancer

Awards and Recognition
- Consumer Advocate Award 2001 presented by then NSW Minister
for Fair Trading, John Aquilina, to Cancer Voices Co-chair, Sally
Crossing

Advocate of the Year award 2002 (The Cancer Council of NSW)
awarded to Cancer Voices co-chair, Max Gardner.
- Co-chairs, Max Gardner and Sally Crossing invested as Members
of the Order of Australia 2004 and 2005 respectively, in recognition
of their work in cancer consumer advocacy
