New Understanding Cancer booklet – LGBTQI+ People and Cancer
Cancer can affect anyone, but the experience can be different for different people. For lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer and intersex (LGBTQI+) people, discrimination and barriers to care can add to the stress of a cancer diagnosis and having treatment.
LGBTQI+ People and Cancer: A guide for people with cancer, their families and friends is a new publication that aims to help LGBTQI+ people deal with the unique challenges they face when undergoing treatment for cancer.
Our new booklet covers a range of topics including:
- Finding LGBTQI+ friendly cancer services
- Telling your cancer care team you are LGBTQI+
- Dealing with discrimination
- Impacts on body image and sexual intimacy
- Fertility after cancer
- Trans and/or gender-diverse people and cancer
- Intersex people and cancer
- Sources of support and information
The information in this booklet was developed with help from LGBTQI+ organisations, health professionals and LGBTQI+ people affected by cancer. It is based on the Out with Cancer research project led by Prof Jane Ussher at Western Sydney University.
You can download the booklet as a PDF from our website or order print copies using the resources order form. It is also available to view as web content on a computer, smartphone or tablet.
